Sparkles and Nippy An Adorable Pair Of Snowmen - New OOAK Handmade Needle Felted Snowmen Dolls

Sparkles and Nippy An Adorable Pair Of Snowmen - 8" and 6" Needle Felted Handmade OOAK Snowmen Art Dolls

Sparkles just loves the winter season and everything that entails - including snowstorms, blizzards, sleet, icicles, cold weather, and the cold. In fact, there's nothing about winter that she doesn't like. Nippy, on the other hand, thinks the winters are getting to be a little too cold for him. He'd prefer a little warmer weather. Certainly not to the point where he would melt, but not sub-zero temperatures.

Both Sparkles and Nippy's bodies are sculpted out of Sunflower's alpaca roving from Rock Garden Alpacas Fiber. nose from a beige mix from Rock Garden Alpacas Fiber. Their black eyes, facial features, and black coal buttons were made using black alpaca roving from Rock Garden Alpacas Fiber. Their cheeks are blushed with a pink chalk and their carrot noses needle felted from orange roving. Their black felt hats were handmade and hand sewn from black felt. Multi-colored blue teal roving was needle felted to form their billowy scarfs.

Sparkles wishes that Nippy would love the winter like she does but just can't convince him. Perhaps it's just too "nippy" for him? What do you think?

My Trio Of Handmade Needle Felted OOAK Santa Art Dolls

My trio of handmade needle felted OOAK Santa art dolls are as different as they are alike.  For sure they are all Santa's and for sure they all love to decorate.

Walter just loves to decorate for the holiday season - especially when he's decorating with fresh cut trees. He loves walking through the woods to find the perfect tree, cutting it down, dragging it back home, and then decorating it with his favorite Christmas tree ornaments. This year he's found the PERFECT tree and is anxious to get started. The problem is he can't seem to find his favorite box of ornaments. He knows he put it in the center hall closet like he does every year. However. when he went to get it he couldn't find the box. What could have happened to it?

Albert, The Thinking Man's Santa spends a lot of time thinking about the upcoming holiday season. Should he do this, should he do that? What about this or that? What happens if he does this or does that? Perhaps he should test this or try that? Right now he's pondering his tree decorations. He wasn't sure if he should go with all white bulbs, all blue or red bulbs, maybe green bulbs? So, he settled for multi-colored bulbs. Albert is hoping his multi-colored bulbs decision is the right one. Perhaps he should rethink this? Perhaps test another color? What do you think?

Richard The Red Santa just loves the Christmas holiday season because he loves the color red and decorating everything red. It's such a cheery and upbeat color and matches beautifully with the green and bright white colors of the holiday season. This year he's decided to decorate his Christmas tree with red lights, a red bow, and all red ornaments. Richard is hoping he'll have enough red ornaments to decorate his whole tree. Hopefully, he'll have enough as nothing but red will do.

Three Santa's who love to decorate.  Alike but different tastes for sure.

My New Trio of Handmade OOAK Needle Felted Witch Art Dolls

My trio of handmade needle felted OOAK witches art dolls are as different as they are alike. For sure they are all witches.

Sometimes Cassandra is a little apprehensive about being a witch. She's not too sure she likes casting spells, turning princes into frogs, or flying around with black ravens. For sure she doesn't like icky spiders or black bats. Most of all she doesn't like living in a dark, gloomy cave.

Just about the only thing she likes about being a witch is being able to fly wherever she wants to go. And fly she does. Just to get away. Cassandra hopes she didn't just turn someone into a frog, but she's unsure..... What do you think?

Tabitha adores being a witch.  She loves casting spells, turning princes into frogs, and flying around with black ravens scaring everyone. She even likes bats, rats, spiders, and living in caves.

There really isn't anything Tabitha doesn't like about being a witch. And, the wonderful black, green, and purple outfits she gets to wear. Well, how can she not like those? Need to turn a prince into a frog or cast a spell on someone - just ask for Tabitha. She LOVES being a witch and all that entails.

Hagatha  isn't afraid of anything witchy except flying. She just doesn't like it. Too many unpredictable situations can arise - like wind, rain, snow, sleet, tornadoes, hurricanes and more.

She much prefers to stay at home in the cave and make witchy potions. That she's excellent at and that she will willingly do. Ask her to fly and you'll get her "Who me!" reaction. Need a witches brew? Just ask Hagatha. Need a few spells cast? Just ask Hagatha. Need a witch to fly around? Don't ask Hagatha. She's no where to be found.

All witches but as different as night and day.

Gotta Love Needle Felted Scarecrows - My New Trio of Handmade Needle Felted OOAK Scarecrow Art Dolls

My trio of handmade needle felted OOAK scarecrow art dolls are as different as they are alike.  For sure they are all scarecrows.   For sure they are all needle felted and for sure they're all sitting on grapevine pumpkins.  That, however, is where their similarity ends.

Stan The Pumpkin Man is a little apprehensive about anyone taking his pumpkins.  He knows that everyone will be coming in Fall for their pumpkins and hopes he'll be less apprehensive about them taking them by then. We'll see......

Penny The Pumpkin Pie Maker just loves baking - especially when she's making her famous pumpkin pies. She has a knack for making the best pumpkin pies in the area and is well known far and wide for them. In fact she has so many requests for her pumpkin pies during the Fall season that she can't keep up with all the orders. She tries to but sometimes she needs help from her cousins, Stan The Scarecrow Man, and Samuel Scarecrow. Stan is more than willing to help - even though he's a little apprehensive about his baking skills. Samuel, on the other hand not only thinks being a scarecrow is beneath him - cooking is also. He's just too regal to bake - or so he thinks.

Unlike his cousin Stan The Pumpkin Man "Samuel Scarecrow" is not apprehensive about anyone taking his pumpkins. In fact, he's more than happy to let anyone take his pumpkins and his bales of hay for free as long as they do the work to harvest the pumpkins and hay bales. He feels that he is too regal to toil in the fields. He was meant for more refined activities like being waited on. Perhaps he should have chosen a different line of work than being a scarecrow.  What do you think....

Scarecrows for sure, but as different as night and day.

My Stan The Pumpkin Man Needle Felted Handmade OOAK Art Doll

Stan The Pumpkin Man - 16" Needle Felted Handmade OOAK Scarecrow Art Doll

I know that I've told you many, many times that I LOVE the fall season. So, over the past few weeks I decided to needle felt some Fall decorations and started with scarecrows. I decided that I would needle felt as much of him as I could. This would include his inner body, outer body, face, hair, arms, hands, legs, boots, and clothes like his pants. I had already decided to use wool felt to make his shirt, hat, and vest as I could easily hand sew them and them needle felt then to his body.

I wanted him to be a sitting on a grapevine pumpkin I had found at Joanns so like bendable cloth dolls I needed to use wire to make his body bendable. I tested the bendable wire on the pumpkin to make sure he wouldn't be too big for it and ended up making him 16" tall.

For his face I decided that my Punky - Elmer's Little Scarecrow face would be a good one to base him on and printed the page his face was on from his pattern.

For the roving I decided to needle sculpt his inner body out of Sunflower's alpaca roving from Rock Garden Alpacas Fiber and his outer body from a beige mix my sister had given me from Rock Garden Alpacas Fiber.   His black boots were needle felted using some of the black alpaca roving my sister had given me from Rock Garden Alpacas Fiber. His hair was going to be a combination of straw yellow roving I had previously purchased and some of Ivy's brown alpaca roving from Rock Garden Alpacas Fiber. Small pieces of orange roving and rust colored roving would be used to needle felt his orange nose and rust colored cheek circles. Black DMC embroidery floss would be used to outline the scarecrow features on his face. Straw yellow roving would simulate straw coming out his shirt sleeves and coming out the bottom of his pants.

As far as his clothes were concerned  I had a wonderful Fall mix roving blend that my sister had also given me that I figured would be perfect for needle felting his pants.

I needle felted his body, head, black boots and hands first then used roving to needle felt most of his facial features.  Then I used small pieces of the straw yellow roving and Ivy's brown alpaca roving to create his multi-colored hair and then needle felted his pants. Then I hand sewed his hat from brown wool felt, hand sewed his shirt from orange wool felt, and hand sewed his vest from brown wool felt.

I cut his shirt out of the orange wool felt on a double fold and made a slit in the neck so it would fit over his head. I hand blanket stitched the side seams with orange DMC embroidery floss and then put his shirt on him. I gathered the shirt around his neck with the orange DMC embroidery floss and then needle felted his wool felt shirt around his neck. Then I gathered his sleeves to his wrists with the orange DMC embroidery floss and gathered the bottom of his shirt to fit his waist with the orange DMC embroidery floss as well. I needle felted the area around his wrists and waist that I had gathered with the orange DMC embroidery floss to secure them to his body. Then I made 3 small needle felted circles for buttons and then needle felted them to his shirt and body. I wrapped some of the wonderful Fall mix roving blend I had used for his pants around his wrists to cover the orange DMC floss gathering and needle felted them to stay. I created a little bow-tie out of the same Fall mix roving blend and needled felted that just under his neck. I took small sections of the straw yellow roving and needle felted small groupings under the edge of his shirt sleeves at his wrists and just under the needle felt edging of the hem of his pants.

For his hat I cut a large circle out of the brown felt for his brim and a rectangle out of the same brown felt for the hat band. I also cut a smaller lighter brown circle out of wool felt to hand sew as an accent color for his hat brim. After hand sewing the hat band seam I hand sewed the hat band to the hat brim with black DMC embroidery floss and then gathered the top of his hat band with black DMC embroidery floss. Then I added the lighter brown circle accent to the hat brim so it could be seen just behind his hair.

I cut a large rectangle for his vest out of the brown felt and then hand sewed the shoulder seams with black DMC embroidery floss. Before putting the vest on him I folded the two front edges over about 1/2" and needle felted the brown wool felt to itself. I put the vest on him and then gathered the back neck line with the black DC embroidery floss and then needle felted the back of the vest and two folded over front edges to his body to hold his vest securely.

I bent his body into a sitting position and hot glued him to the grapevine pumpkin.

I had decided to needle felt a small pumpkin for him to hold in is hands and used orange, green, dark brown, and beige roving for this. Then I needle felted his hands to the sides of the pumpkin so he was securely holding it in his hands.

My finished doll seemed to be a little apprehensive about anyone taking his pumpkins so I decided to call him Stan the Pumpkin Man. He knows that everyone will be coming in Fall for their pumpkins and hopes he'll be less apprehensive about them taking them by then. We'll see......

My Embroidered Vintage Quilt Shop Picture

Several years ago I bought a couple of creative embroidery and stitchery patterns for making ornaments that I wanted to make into little pictures and decided last May that it was time to make them. One was for a birdhouse vintage ornament that I blogged about in a Linda's Blog post entitled, "My Embroidered Vintage Birdhouse Picture."  The other was for an embroidered vintage quilt shoppe ornament that I turned into a picture.

Vintage Ornament #18 is a pattern for an embroidered quilt shoppe from Chickadee Hollow Designs. The pattern included the design on pre-printed pre-colored fabric, as well as a basic embroidery stitches sheet and sheet of basic instructions for completing their ornaments.

I had decided ahead of time that I wanted to frame my ornament as a small picture instead of using it as an ornament.

The pattern included a basic instructions sheet which was a summary sheet for competing all of their ornaments and not specific to the vintage quilt shoppe ornament as well as a sheet showing basic embroidery stitches. It was left up to the user to choose which color floss to use and where and which embroidery stitch to use and where.

The instructions called for positioning the design over a piece of Warm-N-Natural batting and fastening this with small safety pins then embroidering the ornament. The pre-printed pre-colored fabric was fine except it was so small and the design so close to the edge that it was impossible to fit within any embroidery hoop.

My experience has always been that embroideries always come out better when stretched in an embroidery hoop so I chose to baste my to a standard felt square so that I could put in into a small square embroidery frame as shown in the pictures below:

I decided to satin stitch all the quilts on the design and to add more snowflakes.  When my embroidery piece was done I removed it from the embroidery square hoop.

The instructions also said to finish the piece according to the finishing option of your choice. I decided to blanket stitch my ornament to one layer of quilt batting and a back piece of felt as shown in the pictures below:

I cut the quilt shoppe along the brown dotted lines about 1/4" from the edge of the quilt shoppe outline. Using the embroidered quilt shoppe as a guide I cut out a piece of batting and a piece of felt for the backing and then layered them as shown in the picture below:

I had decided to use red floss to blanket stitch around the edges of my vintage quilt shoppe ornament and like how it turned out as shown in the picture below:

As mentioned previously I was going to put my finished vintage quilt shoppe ornament in a small picture frame and had decided to use green decorative paper as a background for my picture as shown in the picture below:

I had chosen a bronze colored metal frame for my finished piece as I thought it really complimented the color of the pre-printed fabric and was thrilled with the way my vintage quilt shoppe ornament turned out.

It took me 12 hours to complete this picture including the framing and was happy with the way it turned out. I hope you like it as much as I do.
