How I Altered An Unusual Witch!

I ran across this picture the other day and I couldn't help but think about why I made a pregnant witch.

Well, in the Fall of  2008 I got an email from a customer telling me that she just loved my witches and wanted to know if I could make an unusual kind of witch for her.

I, of course, was curious. Hmmmm..... witches are witches. What kind of witch did she have in mind that would be so unusual?

Well, it turns out that she had a friend who LOVED witches who also happened to be pregnant and my customer was throwing her a baby shower. So, she wanted to know if I had any "pregnant witches" and if not, would I make her one.

I told her that unfortunately I didn't do custom dolls requests but, would be more than happy to alter a witch I had already made to be pregnant and suggested one of my cloth and wood witches to her.

She loved the witch I had in mind so I altered her to be pregnant and here are the before and after results:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

The witches body was made of wood so what I did was to create a large pair of bloomers and then added a foam ball with stuffing around it to hold the ball in place.

I added a tying ribbon to the waistband of the bloomers so my customer's friend could untie the bloomers and remove the pregnancy ball so she could use the witch as a regular witch decoration in the future.

I hope the baby shower was successful and that my "pregnant" witch was a big success.

I think she turned out really cute. What do you think?

Babies In the Pumpkin Patch Penny Rug Baby Picture Decoration Free E-Pattern

Several years ago I was working on creating wool felt penny rug pictures for my "It's Raining Baby Showers" baby shower decorations line and thought that little baby heads coming out of pumpkins or wearing pumpkin tops as hats would be cute.

They'd all be hiding in the pumpkin patch waiting to be found. So, my "Babies In The Pumpkin Patch" design was born.

"Babies In The Pumpkin Patch" is a free pattern to create an 8 1/2" by 11" wool felt penny rug picture enclosed in an 11" by 14" picture frame.

For the finished picture I used an orange foam sheet as the background instead of a mat.

The wool felt picture is made from two dark brown pieces of wool felt (8 1/2" by 11") which are blanket stitched around all the edges. The orange wool felt pumpkins and leaves are outline embroidered. The baby heads have embroidered and blushed cheek faces, yarn for hair, and ribbon bows for decorations.

The pattern can be made as just a penny rug wool felt blanket stitched picture or enclosed within a picture frame.

Re-Designs For My Swaddling Babies Baby Fabrics

One of my all time favorite doll designs is my "Baby Nicky" doll. He's a baby shower centerpiece doll that I designed based upon my grandson "Nicky" who has the most wonderful, curly head of hair you could ever imagine. I just LOVE it and would love to swap hair with him. Of course, he hates it.

If you've been following my Linda's Blog you know that "Baby Nicky" is involved in a lot of what goes on in "The Dollie Storage Room" and was the impetus for my "It's Raining Baby Showers" product lines.

When I was designing new patterns a couple of years ago I wanted to design some more baby shower centerpieces and favors or ornaments to compliment "Baby Nicky."

While thinking about what to make for favors I  thought about my grandson, Nicky, who was born 31 weeks premature.   He had spent 9 weeks in a special care nursery and I remembered that the nurses would wrap him in a swaddling blanket which allowed them to easily carry him around. They always looked like they were carrying him around like a football.

The nurses taught all the family members how to bathe, feed, and dress Nicky so I learned how to wrap my grandson in a swaddling blanket. So, I thought maybe a favor with baby heads sticking out of a swaddling blanket would be cute and created a couple primitive favor ornaments.  I loved the ornaments shown in the picture at the start of this post that I decided to create a new line  of custom fabric designs for my baby shower fabric lines and designed the Swaddling Baby Heads Fabric Designs Collection.

In thinking about what kind of graphics to create for my "Swaddling Babies" designs I wanted graphics that were adorable and fun. I also wanted fabrics that you could coordinate with each other and make wonderful baby shower decorations or nursery home decor gifts from.

My “Baby Nicky” Baby Boy Baby Shower Centerpiece Doll and Decoration

"Baby Nicky" was named after my grandson, Nicky, who I affectionately call "Noodles." Like his brother he too is adorable, cuddly, lovable, and has the most enviable head of brown curly hair that you'd ever want to see. I would give my eye teeth, so to speak, for his curly hair. He, on the other hand, would probably prefer my straight hair. Well, boys will be boys, and girls will be girls. We always want just the opposite, don't we?

My grandson "Nicky" was born premature at 31 weeks weighting 3 pounds 1 ounce and spent the first 9 weeks of his life in an intensive care unit. The nurses there were exceptional and treated Nicky as if he were one of their own. In fact, I began to wonder, at times, if they were dragging out his release just because they loved him so.

Fifteen minutes after Nicky was born his Dad took us in to the intensive care unit to see him. I couldn't get over how humanly perfect he was at just 3 pounds 1 ounce. He just looked like a very, very tiny little man. I don't know what I was expecting to see but, he just took my breathe away. Even then he had a full head of brown hair. It wasn't curly just yet but would be within a matter of time.

His Mom, who was my biggest fan besides my husband and my Mother, used to give me all Nicky's baby clothes and shoes for my dolls. I know she was hoping that they would all come back to her in one way or another in the form of a doll for her house. A lot did.

In any event, I just loved all Nicky's little baby clothes. There's just something special about tiny little Reeboks and little denims. I can remember shopping with her one day at a "Baby Gap" store. We went in and just laughed and laughed at how tiny everything was. I just loved all the clothes and so did she. We went shopping several times after that for clothes for Nicky and always came away laughing. Sometimes we bought some. Sometimes we just went to look and laugh.

So, I knew I wanted to create a doll that would remind me of Nicky and his full head of curly brown hair and his most adorable baby clothes. That's how "Baby Nicky" was born. Isn't he adorable? Don't you just want to grab all those curls? I do. In fact, I used to hate it when his father would cut all his curls off. I tried to teach "Nicky" to tell his Dad "Don't cut my Hair!" It didn't work. Maybe someday Nicky will realize how beautiful his head of curly brown hair is and leave it alone. Yeah, sure, Nana! Dream on!

Baby Nicky is a 20" baby boy doll pattern. Nicky is a free-standing boy doll in his pajamas and ready for bedtime. He has an undershirt, flannel jacket with long rolled sleeves and pipe trim, and flannel pajama bottoms. He has round black button eyes, a fabric covered wood head, wood body and wood feet covered with slipper socks. He has long curly brown hair and has a night cap knotted at the end on his head. He is carrying a teddy bear in his left hand and a cherished flannel blankie in his right hand.

Every time I look at the "baby Nicky" doll I can't help but remember how small and tiny "Nicky" was at 3 pounds 1 ounce and think "how precious life is!"

Baby Nicky is so adorable you just want to squeeze him. With that massive head of curly hair you can't help but love him. He's the perfect image of a cute baby boy. And, he's all ready for his bedtime story. He has his "blankie" and his "teddy" so he's all set to go. Will you read him a story?

Baby Nicky is so adorable you just can't resist him. How To Make My Nursery Baby Girl and Boy Wood Plaques Decoration Free E-Book

Who doesn't love adorable pink and blue decorations for a babies nursery? I know I do - especially when I can sponge paint them.

During my sponge painted shadowbox phase, several years ago, I thought bright pink and blue shadowbox plaque decorations would be pretty hanging on a nursery wall. So, I designed a pink one for girls and a blue one for boys.

The 9" by 11 1/2" plaques are sponge  painted with sponge painted 'Girl" and "Boy" letters.

I had so much fun making these I thought you might enjoy a free e-book on how to make some of your own.
