4th of July, Hairy!

"4th of July, Hairy!" loves Uncle Sam and just wishes that everyone would stop telling him that he looks like a "Santa!"

Now, don't get "Hairy" wrong. He doesn't think there's anything wrong with looking like "Santa." He just feels that he looks more like "Uncle Sam."

After all - just look at his folksy, country outfit.

"4th of July, Hairy!" is a 16" country Santa doll with a muslin cloth body. His face is embroidered and he has black bead eyes, wired glasses, and pink cheeks. His eyebrows and mustache are made of raw mohair as is his scraggly beard. His have red and blue colored stars all over them.

He has a full head of wool roving hair that is barely controlled underneath his lined and patriotic hat.

He is wearing his favorite fringed shirt which is gathered at the neck and wrists. He is also wearing his favorite fringed and pantaloons with cross suspenders that are tied at his ankles with straps.

So, what do you think? Does "4th of July, Hairy!" look more like "Santa?" Hair and all?

Yankee Doodle Andy! and Give Me Liberty, Annie!

My “Smiling Sam! The USA Man” Country Uncle Sam Doll Decoration

"Smiling Sam! The USA Man" is a proud American. In fact, he's a direct descendant of George Washington and couldn't be any prouder of his heritage. That's why he's wearing his favorite patriotic outfit. He loves his country and fellow countrymen and will do anything he can to lend support where ever he's needed. Today he's going to the public library for History Day. He's Uncle Sam and will be teaching the kids about patriotism.

"Smiling Sam! The USA Man" is a 29" country Uncle Sam doll from our "Pleasantly Plump Series." He is a squared bottomed self-standing cloth and wood doll. His arms and hands are wired and his cloth head and cloth body are supported by a wood dowel and wood base. His face is outlined embroidered with black back stitches and he has indented black beads for eyes. His cheeks are rosy and blushed and his moustache is made of raw mohair. He has a beautifully trimmed goatee made of wool roving. Sam has has a mass of straight, white wool roving doll hair which is barely controlled under his patriotic top hat. His hat is lined and has a large, wide brim and contrast hat band strip. He is wearing his favorite patriotic outfit. His inner body is supported by a dowel and is covered by his shirt and squared-bottom and striped pants. His white shirt is gathered at the neck edge and wrists. A double layered ribbon cummerbund is tightly fastened around his waist. His jacket has facing along all the edges, cuffs, and fold down lapels. It is top stitched along all the edges and fastened with 4 floss bows. A red, white, and blue bowtie is just under his chin. Sam is carrying an American flag decorated with patriotic stars and patriotic wired ribbon bows. A painted wooden U.S.A. heart is secured to his base with wired ribbon bows.

Other Americana and 4th of July Craft Decorations For The Summer Months

Now I know what you're thinking, "You've never met a wreath you haven't loved. Yeah, right Linda.... you love everything crafty. In fact, there isn't any craft you've met that you haven't loved!" Well, that may be true but wreaths certainly are one of my favorites. I love making them and love decorating with them.

So, of course, I made a patriotic wreath that hangs in my kitchen during the Summer months. I made the wreath shown in the picture above in 2002 and it was made based on a Pretty Primitives pattern.

I also love decorating my front door for the various holidays and seasons. My house is painted a colonial burgundy color so the big Uncle Sam woodcraft, shown in the picture above, looks great on the front door all during the Summer months. He was also made in 2002 and was based on a TLC Crafters pattern.

I had seen an adorable Uncle Sam ornament by Mary Ayres in a June/July 2000 Crafts magazine and just had to make one. He's totally adorable - don't you think?

My BIG Uncle Sam!

What would summer be like without all our Americana, 4Th of July, and Uncle Sam decorations. Well, it certainly would be boring color wise. The red, whites, and blues are always so festive and cheery looking.

One of my favorite BIG dolls and woodcraft is a self-sitting Uncle Sam that resides in the corner of my kitchen for the entire summer. He just sits there and every time I look at him I can't help but think of the role New England played in the history of this country. In particular he makes me think of the American Revolution and Paul Revere, etc.

My Uncle Sam is 32" tall and was made based upon a TLC Crafters design. He's so cheery sitting in his corner that I decided to name him "Firecracker Sam."

"Firecracker Sam" was made from 3/4" pine wood and was painted blue. Painted black stitches outline the edge of his face, beard, and mustache. Painted white stars adorn his hat and white stripes run down his pant legs. He is holding a painted wooden flag and set of firecrackers in his lap.

So, all summer long he just sits atop his pedestal. He did have one request this year and that was to know when we would be showing his favorite movie - "Yankee Doodle Dandy." I told him I wasn't sure, but I would try to make sure we showed it for him.

Gotta Love Americana and 4th of July Decorations

Sam Man - The Snow Patriot - E-Pattern and Handmade Doll

"Sam Man - The Snow Patriot!" wants to show everyone how patriotic he is and is going to do so by wearing his favorite red, white, and blue outfit when he marches in the "Independence Day" parade.

His couldn't be prouder of his country or his fellow country men. They fought well in the Revolutionary War and won their right to independence. That's cause for celebration in Sam Man's book.

"Sam Man - The Snow Patriot!" is a 15" self-standing patriotic snowman Americana doll. He has warm and natural body. His face is outline embroidered with black floss and he has two large antique button eyes, a felt carrot nose, and blushed cheeks. He has two large black button down the center of his snowman body.

He is wearing his favorite outfit. His coat is lined and cuffed, and is tied just under his neck with a floss bow. His bow tie is red, white, and blue and his floppy lined top hat is, too. He has a long white scarf wrapped around his neck and tied in a knot to the left side of his neck.

"Sam Man - The Snow Patriot!" is carrying two flags that he hopes to wave during the Independence Day parade.

"Snow Me Red, White, and Blue!" is a proud citizen - that is, if snowmen can be citizens - and wants everyone to know it.

So, let's hear it for the right to be independent. Let's hear it for America - Land of the free!

Gotta Love Those BIG Dolls!

I may have mentioned that I love dolls! Ya think!!!!

I love just about every size and shape doll, but I do seem to have a preference for BIG dolls and woodcraft's. By BIG I mean 3, 4, or even 5 foot dolls or woodcraft's.

I love displaying the 3' or larger dolls and woodcraft's around my house during the various seasons and holidays. We have all the seasons covered and all the holidays, too.

It might be a large bear displayed, a sitting scarecrow, a sitting Uncle Sam, a large Santa, tall Santa and Mrs. Claus pair, a sitting bunny, a scarecrow on a pedestal, or even a large turkey. It could even be a large moose or BIG bunny.

Whether its a large doll standing in my sun room or on display in my hall I just love them. Sometimes its a self-sitter sitting on a pedestal in the corner of my kitchen.Sometimes it's a Frankenstein waiting for the kids on Halloween. You never know what I might decide to display or where I might place them.

Wherever they may be they are always a delight to see. And, each time I see one I can remember cutting the wood with hubby and putting the dolls together.

Whether I was painting them or gluing them or sewing their outfits I always seemed to enjoy them. My large dolls are a favorite of my husband and I and were made specifically to display around the house. I also suspect they are the favorites of some of my relatives.

One of my favorite BIG dolls that I made for my house is a bear that I named "Harry."

He's a 36" bear made from a Design Farm pattern and he is so cute you just want to hug him.

Right now he is proudly displayed in my front hall. He stands there quietly surveying all that is going on in our house. Harry never makes a fuss or disturbs anyone. He's just there to watch and observe.

One of the best things about a lot of the BIG dolls is that they are wearing some of my Grandson's baby clothes. So, when I look at the dolls it always brings back fond memories of my Grandson as a baby. They are what I consider to be sentimental keepsake crafts.

Harry is wearing my Grandson's baby jeans. If you look closely you can see the diaper snaps that run along the inside legs. Harry doesn't need to have a diapers changed - my Grandson definitely did.

Harry is also wearing one of my Grandson's thermal tops. His vest is lined and decorated with 3 triangle top pockets with buttons. It is also decorated with a tree with cotton puffs for snow and embroidered with zigzag stitching all along the edges.

He is wearing a large lined hunters cap with ear flaps. Harry's body is made of wood covered with flush felt. His feet are made from my brother's old white socks embroidered with DMC floss for ties. Harry's face is embroidered and he has large brown animal eyes and a lighter color plush felt for his snout and the inside of his ears.

I just love the expression on Harry's face. Sometimes he appears sad to me and sometimes he appears happy. You never know. I think he's just happy to be out and on display. I think I'll go and give him a BIG hug.
