My Families Love Of Pillows and My Pinterest Quilting Tutorials Board

My mother, sister and I have been sewing for many, many years.  My sister and I learned from our mother at a very young age.  We started small and over the years both my sister and I, as well as our mother, honed our sewing skills and, as a result, ended up making many, many things including our own clothes, large quilts, small quilts, mini quilts, quilted pillows. place-mats and runners.

My sister continued her love of quilts by creating Inspired Creations By D quilted wall art.

After making a bunch of quilts that she gave away as gifts my mother gave up large quilts in favor of smaller pillows.  She loved making log cabin pillows like those shown in the picture at the beginning of this post.  She was happy to make the standard log cabin quilts and other quilted pillows until she learned how to make folded log cabin quilted pillows.  From that point on it was all folded log cabin pillows, table runners and place-mats.

She even took her love of log cabin quilts to the point where she was making miniature 8" by 8" pillows for my baby "Bud."  She made two of them just for him - one for downstairs in the family room when he was laying on the sofa and one for the chair we used as his bed upstairs.

He loved them and it was so adorable seeing him laying down with his head on his pillow.

My mother also liked making folded mini pillows, place-mats and table runners like the table runner shown in the picture above.

The first time I made a quilt I thought, "This is fun!" However, like making clothes I very quickly learned that I didn't want to spend a lot of time on large quilts and outfits to wear. I much preferred mini quilts and doll clothes, both of which were smaller and took a lot less time. I know, I know - I get bored easily and large quilts are very time consuming.  So, I focused more on making dolls and smaller quilts like pillows, place-mats, table runners, etc.

I took making pillows one step further when I started creating custom fabric designs for my Linda Walsh Originals Spoonflower shop. I made lots of pillows with my custom fabric designs like those shown in the picture collage above.

I had so much fun making my Sneaks Family custom fabric pillows for my grandsons for Christmas gifts one year I decided to create a free e-pattern for all of you so you could make some Sneaks Family pillows of your own.  If you'd like to make some of your own my free e-pattern is here.  Please note the design of the individual fabrics shown in the e-pattern have changed since that e-pattern was created.
For The Love Of Pillows

I also like looking at some of the beautiful free pillow creations there are out there as there are a lot of exceptional quilters and seamstresses on the web offering all sorts of "freebies" to inspire everyone else. There's a lot of quilting inspiration as well as pillow inspiration.

As a result I've collected a lot of pins on my Pinterest boards.  I have some on my Quilting Tutorials, Video's, Patterns and How-To's - Everyday Quilted Pillows Projects Pinterest board and a lot on all the different Quilting Tutorials, Video's, Patterns and How-To's Pinterest board sections I have.

There are 30 sections on my Quilting Tutorials, Video's, Patterns and How-To's Pinterest board.  The 30 sections are for everyday quilts to seasonal quilts to holiday quilts to specific types of quilts boards.

At last count I had over 2,000 quilted tutorial pins.  Definitely a lot of wonderful quilted eye candy to see and so much to learn.

I love learning new quilting techniques, watching quilting video how-to's, and reading quilting tutorials. I hope you do, too and hope you like my selection of quilt making how-to's, video's and tutorials.

This Surprised Me - I Had To Change My Nurses Fabric Designs

Even after being online for 16 years you can still be surprised.  Well, at least I can.

Nurses Medical Professionals Design Challenge New

On August 25th I was notified by Spoonflower that twelve of my nurses designs had been removed from my Spoonflower account.

I thought, "What!  They were all my original designs from close to a decade ago based on the nurse handmade dolls I had designed and made years ago. What could possibly be in violation?"

Well, it turns out I had made a mistake in the design that I was totally unaware of and never gave any thought to.  I would never have thought what they were citing would ever have been a problem.

It seems that Spoonflower had been notified from lawyers representing the Red Cross, holders of the Red Cross mark and name, that they had identified one or more of my designs that they thought might infringe upon their registered trademarks or copyrights.

According to Spoonflower, the objection was the red crosses I had placed on the front of the nurses hats and medical bags, as well as some I used on a couple designs in the background.

I was surprised as I'm a believer in copyrights and try not to violate anyone else's copyrights or trademarks that I'm aware of.

I was never aware that using a cross, which I have always believed is a geometric symbol, would violate someone else's trademarks or copyrights.  I guess, if it's red in color, then it is in violation.

Spoonflower had no choice but to remove my designs and I totally understood this.

However, given what a wonderful company Spoonflower is they did allow me to re-work the design and remove any imagery or mention of red crosses and then upload the revised designs back to my Spoonflower shop, which I did.

I have always loved my original nurses designs and didn't really want to drastically change the design so I decided that since most people love nurses that I'd just change the red cross to a red heart and place that on the nurses hats, medical bag, and throughout the backgrounds where it made sense.

Out of curiosity I decided to see if there were any other Spoonflower designs that had red crosses on them and didn't find any on Spoonflower but, did find hundreds of thousands of designs with red crosses on them in a google image search.

Whether or not any of them are in violation of the Red Cross copyrights and trademarks is not for me to decide.  I know mine no longer are.

I hope you like all my revised designs.

New Fabric Designs For My Victorian Books Toile Collection at Spoonflower

I just love my Victorian Books Toile Designs created from the graphics I got from an old Harper's Young People Illustrations Book from 1889 that someone had given me.

As you might recall from a previous Linda's Blog post some of the mixed media projects I created this past summer were mixed media items that required quite a bit of old book papers for collage purposes.  So much so I ran out of the book pages.

Well, in looking around the house I found an old Harper's Young People Illustrations Book from 1889 that was in poor condition and with some of the pages already missing.

I didn't know where this book came from and who it belonged to.  Most of the old books I have belonged to my great Aunt Flossie but I didn't think this was one of hers.  The time-frame was right but the book wasn't signed with her name - which she always did on the inside of the front cover.

In looking at the book in poor shape and missing some of the pages I thought it still might be perfect for collage purposes so I started to tear some of the pages out.  I didn't tear too many out because right away I found myself looking at some of the beautiful black and white illustrations that were contained within the book.

They were enchanting: illustrations of Victorian children, Victorian girls with dolls, Victorian families, holiday and seasonal illustrations and more.  I couldn't help but admire the artistic capabilities of the artists who had drawn them back in 1888 to 1889.

So, while tearing out the pages I started to set some that I really liked aside. Needless to say I wound up with a large pile I wanted to keep.  That still left me with a large pile to collage with so I was happy.

Contained within the book were many illustrations of Victorian girls, books, and dolls.  Well, as you know, I love graphics of girls and dolls so, for sure, I wouldn't be using any of these for collage purposes.

Well, I finally got the chance to add four more designs to my Victorian Books Toile Design Collection at my Linda Walsh Originals Fabric Designs at Spoonflower.com and I couldn't be happier with them.  They compliment the other designs I have in this collection. There are now twelve different designs in this collection and I'm hoping to add more as time permits.

Like my other whimsical designs these are perfect for sewing and crafting purposes and perfect for making decorations, ornaments, pillows, quilts, etc.

I hope you enjoy our my new designs, which are shown below:
