Twenty Years Without You - Kim

Today is May 23, 2020 and it's been twenty years since we lost you  - our beloved Kim.

Twenty years without seeing you, without hearing your voice, without participating in your infectious laugh, without seeing that "little twinkle" of impishness in your eyes - especially when you were plotting something, without seeing your adorable dimples, without seeing your beautiful face and experiencing your beautiful soul every day, and without talking endlessly with you.

Twenty years without shopping, shopping, and shopping with you, without watching you mothering our amazing grandchildren and seeing them grow into the extraordinary adults they have become, and without helping you with whatever you needed done.

Twenty years without planning and attending events with you, without discussing everything from a good recipe to world events, without cooking, cleaning and crafting with you.

Twenty years without the quietness of just being with you and doing absolutely nothing (which wasn't very often given you had four children).

Most of all, twenty years of missing you.  Our beloved daughter, step-daughter, sister, wife, mother, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, cousin, aunt, granddaughter, niece, and to so many - a friend.

Twenty years without living life with you - our beautiful Kim.

I promised you we would never forget you and we haven't and never will.  How could we possibly ever forget the imprint you left on our hearts and souls.

How could we ever forget the love you shared with all of us during the precious thirty-four years we had with you.

How could we ever forget you, Kim.  That would be impossible and something none of us would ever be capable of doing.

I've Got To Try Custom On Demand Paint By Numbers Kits

It's definitely not time for Christmas decorations crafting yet, so why am I showing the Christmas ornaments in the collage above?

Well, something I saw the other day brought me back to over fifty-five years ago and something I used to love to do.  It was called "paint by number" and I think I created my first masterpiece, if you can call it that, when I was 8 or so.  I think it was a kit from Craft Works.

I don't remember what the picture was - probably an animal or landscape.  What I do remember was I loved it even though I wasn't very good at it.  Of course, my parents thought it was great or so they said.

I'm sure, like all parents, they were trying to encourage me to continue trying.  "If at first you don't succeed, try try again! Right?"

So, what did I see that stirred this memory?  Well, it was an ad for a paint by number website that sells paint by number kits.

But, what really intrigued me was they offered an on demand paint by number kit.  Basically, you upload or send them one of your favorite pictures and they create a kit for you which includes the acrylic paints, numbered linen canvas, and brushes to create your paint by number picture.  How fun would that be?

If I can remember correctly, which for a senior citizen is questionable at best, I can remember attempting many, many paint by numbers kits over the years.   Some were on canvas, some on black velvet, and some on wood like the Christmas ornaments shown in the picture at the beginning of this post.  I think I completed those in the late 1960's or early 1970's.  As you can see I still wasn't very good at it, but I kept trying.

Some kits were easy and some were very difficult.  To be honest I'd have to admit I gave up on some of them.  They were definitely way beyond my skill level but, at least I tried them.  I didn't think I could do some of the them, but, you never know, I could have pleasantly surprised myself.

Well, given by love of history and research, of course, I had to find out more about the origins of paint by number and recent resurgence.  Here's what I found out:

According to Wikipedia.com: Paint by number or painting by numbers are kits having a board on which light markings to indicate areas to paint, and each area has a number and a corresponding numbered paint to use. The kits come with little compartmentalized boxes where the numbered color pigments are stored. The users are encouraged to wash the paintbrush every time a new numbered color is being used. The kits were invented, developed and marketed in 1950 by Max S. Klein, an engineer and owner of the Palmer Paint Company of Detroit, Michigan, and Dan Robbins, a commercial artist.

Also, according to Wikipedia:

The first patent for the paint by number technique was filed in 1923 and in 1951 the Palmer Show Card Paint Company asked Dan Robbins to help them create the CraftMaster paint by number kits.  They subsequently sold 12 million kits.

In the 1960's the first paint by number images of Mars came out and in 1993 Jacquelyn Schiffman, following the death of her father, Max Klein, donated the Palmer Paint Co. paint by number archives to the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

In 2008 a private collector decided to create a museum of the largest archive of paint by number works called, the Paint By Numbers Museum.

Also, according to Wikipedia:  In May 2011, Dan Robbins and Palmer Paint Products, Inc., together developed and brought to market a new 60th-anniversary paint by number set.[7] This collectors' set was created in memory of the survivors and those who had lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and depicts the Twin Towers standing in spirit across the Manhattan skyline.

Since then it seems paint by number has become quite the rage for reducing stress and relaxation therapy.  There are classes everywhere, arts & crafts websites and museums selling historic art paint by numbers kits, and clubs on social media dedicated to this.

YouTube currently has hundreds of paint by number video's from how-to's to just watching someone complete their paint by number.  I haven't watched any of them yet.  I might find the how-to's interesting if they offered any tips for mixed media techniques but I'm not sure I could just watch someone complete a typical paint by number for hours.

I always find it amusing that the past always seems to become the present and something from decades ago is all the rage now.  I often wonder what our ancestors would think of all of this.  Hopefully, they'd be amused, too.

As far as I'm concerned the more the merrier.  I'd like to try a paint by number of a Monet landscape some time but am really intrigued by the print on demand paint by number kit as I can use a favorite photograph of my own or design of my own.

So, of course, I also had to do a little research to see where on demand paint by number kits were being created and sold.  And, to my surprise there were quite a few websites, which are as follows:

The good thing about paint by number, which I think is why it appeals to so many people, is you don't have to be an artist to try it.  After all, like my parents told me - if at first you don't succeed try try again.  With all the paint by number kits available now you'll be honing your skills for a very long time.

Coloring Pages Art & Printables For Adults Pinterest Board

I absolutely loved coloring as a child.   After all who doesn't remember coloring as a child and how relaxing it was. I could spend hours on end just coloring away.

So, of course, it should come as no surprise that I would create some free coloring pages for kids.  Plenty of pages with coloring activities for you and your children to enjoy coloring together or to keep them occupied for days on end.

But, coloring pages aren't just for kids anymore.  Adult coloring pages became all the rage back in 2016 as a way for adults to relax and relieve stress.  Well, like any rage, the availability of free and paid coloring books just grew and grew.   Everyone was creating coloring pages from artists to museums to publishers and coloring supply companies.

And, like any rage creativity took over when coloring someone else's pages became coloring your own designs and the creations of your own beautiful art journals.

I love to color and would love to learn how to create my own art journals.  I'm not that confident in my own artistic drawing capabilities but hope to take an online e-class at some point.

In the meantime I decided to create to Pinterest boards to house all the free coloring pages I found and all the free art journal tutorials, video's, patterns and how-to's I would like to try.

Victorian Books Collage Sheets For Crafts Free E-Book

As you know from my previous posts in thinking about some of the crafts projects I wanted to do this summer and fall I thought about all the Victorian images I had created and thought it would be nice to offer two free e-books with printable collage sheets that could be used for scrapbook, mixed media, collage, decoupage and other paper crafts.

There were a LOT of images to choose from so I decided to start with the Victorian book related images and separated these into two categories for two e-books: 1) Harper's Young People Books Illustrations and Sayings For Crafts Free E-Book, and 2) Victorian Books Collage Sheets For Scrapbook Free E-Book.  

In the first e-book the images are the actual Harper's Young People Books illustrations with the backgrounds removed.  In the second e-book the images are several on my Victorian books toile designs in the blue, burgundy, brown, and black/white colorized versions.

Harper's Young People Books Illustrations and Sayings For Crafts Free E-Book

Some of the mixed media projects I created this past summer required quite a bit of old book papers for collage purposes.  So much so I ran out of the book pages.  Truth be told it wasn't the projects themselves that used up the paper it was the number of projects I was creating..... lol

Mixed media, collage and decoupage crafts use a LOT of paper containing pictures, illustrations, graphics, words, ephemera, etc.  and I am always on the lookout for papers of this nature.  In thinking about some of the crafts projects I wanted to do this summer and fall I decided that some of the Harper's Young People Illustrations from the old book I had would be perfect.

To give you a little background - Last spring when looking around my house for some old papers I found an old Harper's Young People Illustrations Book from 1889 that was in poor condition and with some of the pages already missing.

I don't know where this book came from and who it belonged to.  Most of the old books I have belonged to my great Aunt Flossie but I didn't think this was one of hers.  The time-frame was right but the book wasn't signed with her name - which she always did on the inside of the front cover.

I can remember as a young girl asking her why she signed all her books and she said; "so that anyone who borrows them will know who the books belong to."  Makes sense to me.  So, for my whole life every book I've ever bought I've signed the inside of the front cover, too.  Kind of a sweet tribute to my great Aunt.

I was pretty sure this book didn't belong to my great Aunt but had no idea where it came from or who gave it to me.  After all this time suffice to say I'll probably never know.

From what I could tell there were 52 weekly magazine volume's contained within that were dated from November 1888 until November of 1889.  Each of the weekly volume's sold for one penny.

In looking at the book in poor shape and missing some of the pages I thought it still might be perfect for collage purposes so I started to tear some of the pages out.  I didn't tear too many out because right away I found myself looking at some of the beautiful black and white illustrations that were contained within the book.

They were enchanting: illustrations of Victorian children, Victorian girls with dolls, Victorian families, Victorian children at school, Victorian children reading books, holiday and seasonal illustrations and more.  I couldn't help but admire the artistic capabilities of the artists who had drawn them back in 1888 to 1889.

So, while tearing out the pages I started to set some that I really liked aside. Needless to say I wound up with a large pile I wanted to keep.  That still left me with a large pile to collage with so I was happy.

Contained within the book were many illustrations of Victorian girls, books, and dolls.  Well, as you know, I love graphics of girls and dolls so, for sure, I wouldn't be using any of these for collage purposes.  I also love books and knew I wouldn't be tearing any of those illustrations up either for collage purposes.

I loved the illustrations so much I decided to take some pictures of the black and white illustrations I had set aside so I could see them blown up on the computer.  I wanted to see the fine details in the drawings and have found taking pictures and uploading them to the computer is a great way to see them blown up.

Another advantage of doing this is I can share some of them with you and show you some of the blown-up areas in the illustrations that enchanted me which I did in several Linda's Blog posts.

After removing the background from the illustrations I decided to collage them into a Victorian Toile Design as I have always loved these fabric designs and wanted to create some of my own.

When I was satisfied with the design I decided to create brown, blue, black/white, and burgundy colorized versions of this design as I wanted  a Victorian authentic look.  Victorian Toile Designs are usually some sort of scene depicting a rural scene, usually involving animals and people.

Well, in looking at some of the illustrations I thought they would be perfect for a new "Victorian Books Toile Design" of custom products in my "We Love Books" custom products gallery so, of course, I created a bunch of custom product designs.

For The Love Of "The Crayon Box That Talked" By Shane DeRolf and My Coloring Books

The "dollies" are a fun loving bunch and they LOVE to color, which is why they've demanded that I keep creating coloring books.

The problem is there are a LOT of dolls that live in "The Dollie Storage Room" and they get bored when they have nothing to do. And, "bored" dollies or children is not something you want.  If you're a parent you'll know what I mean by that.

So, to keep them busy I need to keep creating coloring books for them.  So, far I've created nine coloring books and, so far, I've managed to keep them occupied.

The "dollies" are all very artistic and like to try all different types of art supplies to use for their coloring pages.  They'll use colored pencils, markers, lead pencils, pens, and crayons.  I tend to think they prefer their crayons the most.

Several years ago I found a saying by Shane DeRolf that I absolutely loved.  It was entitled "The Crayon Box That Talked" and was a beautiful saying about humanity.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The Crayon Box That Talked

While walking into a toy store the day before today
I overheard a crayon box with many things to say

"I don't like Red!" said Yellow and Green said "Nor do I"
"And no one here likes Orange but no one knows just why"

"We are a box of crayons that doesn't get along
Said Blue to all the others "Something here is wrong"

Well, I bought that box of crayons and took it home with me
 And laid out all the colours so the crayons all could see

They watched me as I coloured with Red and Blue and Green
And Black and White and Orange and every colour in between

They watched as Green became the grass and Blue became the sky
The Yellow sun was shining bright on White clouds drifting by

Colours changing as they touched becoming something new
They watched me as I coloured - they watched me till I was through

And when I finally finished I began to walk away
And as I did the crayon box had something more to say

"I do like Red!" said Yellow and Green said, "so do I"
And Blue you were terrific! So high up in the sky

"We are a box of crayons each one of us unique
But when we get together the picture is more complete"

Loved Crafting As A Kid and My Crafting With Kids Pinterest Board

I absolutely love to craft and especially love creating free tutorials, e-patterns, free e-printables, free e-books and how-to's for my customers and blog readers and have created a lot of "freebies" over the years.  To say the variety of crafts I like to try is an eclectic mix would be an understatement.  I don't think I've even found a craft I haven't liked.

My love of crafts developed as a young child.  You see, my family is a family of crafters and have been for many generations. From my great aunt, grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, brothers, sister, nieces, nephews, children and grandchildren we're sewing enthusiasts, painters, woodworkers, knitters, crafters, designers, etc. and we all learned as small children from each other. 

And, as a crafter, there is nothing more enjoyable than teaching a young child how to make something and watching the sheer delight on their face as they learn how to make something and how proud they are when their creation is complete.  The sense of accomplishment is immeasurable.

Scare Me Dazed Primitive Scarecrow Ornament Free E-Pattern

You've met "Scare Me Happy!" and "Scare Me Melancholy!" - now we'd like you to meet "Scare Me Dazed!" He's the middle brother and is always - well, kind of dazed! He is definitely in a fog most of the time.!

When "Scare Me Dazed!" was born he was awoken out of a peaceful sound sleep and has never been able to recover. He was startled awake. It's no wonder he's never recovered! His brothers know better than to ever ask "Scare Me Dazed!" to do anything for them. He'd willingly agree, but forget what he was supposed to do before he left the room. It's not that he isn't smart! He just can never find his way out of the fog! He's not even sure if any crows come to visit him or whether or not he's doing his job.

"Scare Me Dazed" is a 6" cloth scarecrow ornament. He has an embroidered and watercolor penciled muslin face, burlap hat, raffia hair, and his head is atop a grapevine ball. He has the most beautiful bright blue eyes that are always staring as if he's, well - in a fog! He has rust colored gathered lace an ribbon bow decorations on the top and bottom of his grapevine ball. He has a ribbon hanger so he can be hung just about anywhere and makes a wonderful addition to any one's Fall decor.

Scare Me Melancholy! Primitive Scarecrow Ornament Free E-Pattern

You've already met "Scare Me Happy!" Now we'd like you to meet "Scare Me Melancholy!"

And, melancholy he certainly is. "Scare Me Melancholy!" is the oldest of 3 "Scarecrow" brothers. Maybe that accounts for his being so melancholy! His younger brothers are "Scare Me Dazed!" and he's always in a fog and the other brother is "Scare Me Happy!" and he's always - well, too darn happy!

"Scare Me Melancholy!" was born with a an amazed look on his face and instead of crying when he was born he came out wondering why he was born. And, he has been wondering ever since. He'll hang for hours on end so pensive that none of the crows will visit him.

Now that's alright, because he's doing his job keeping the crows away. It's just that "Scare Me Melancholy" doesn't understand why the crows don't want to visit him. He might be pensive and might always be reflecting, but he's not gloomy. Scare Me Melancholy!" wishes his brothers could understand why he's so reflective. He loves his brothers and can be very thoughtful at times. He just loves to reminisce and talk about "the good ole" days - back when.......

"Scare Me Melancholy" is a 6" cloth scarecrow ornament. He has an embroidered and watercolor penciled muslin face, burlap hat, curly raffia hair, and his head is sitting atop a bale of straw. He has a rust printed fabric bow to adorn his neck and one to adorn his burlap hat. He has a ribbon hanger so he can be hung just about anywhere and makes a wonderful addition to any one's Fall decor.

Scare Me Happy Primitive Scarecrow Ornament Free E-Pattern

"Scare Me Happy!" was born with a smile on his face and instead of crying when he was born he came out laughing. And, he has been laughing ever since. He's so happy that when the crows come to visit they all start laughing. Not crowing - laughing.

Now that's something to see and hear! A bunch of crows laughing!

"Scare Me Happy!" wished he could put a smile on the faces of his brothers. He's tried, but to no avail. But, since he's so happy and such an optimist he figures that he'll win them over eventually.

"Scare Me Happy" is a 6" cloth scarecrow ornament. "Scare Me Happy!" has an embroidered and watercolor penciled muslin face, burlap hat, raffia hair, and his head is atop a grapevine ball. Alice's Adventures In Wonderland Free Coloring Pages E-Book

"Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" is such a charming book and I have been having such a wonderful time creating scrapbook papers, vinyl sticker collections, custom products with the Alice designs, and custom fabric designs I decided to create something for the "dollies" and all the children out there who love "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland."

The "dollies" like when I'm having a good time but sometimes they get a little jealous so I have to appease them and thought free coloring pages that I created from the Arthur Rackham's and John Tenniel's illustrations from the "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" book by Lewis Carroll would make them happy as they love to color. 

To my delight they were thrilled with the coloring pages and grabbed the free e-book right out of my hands.  I had only made one copy of the free e-book and had to quickly make enough copies for all the "dollies" who wanted to color. Needless to say I was at the copy machine for quite some time.

My free e-book contains contains sixteen 8 1/2" by 11" coloring pages.
